On May 9, 2019, Fendley Joseph — a 28-year-old Verizon Wireless retail sales representative in Murrieta, California — was charged by federal criminal complaint in the Eastern District of Michigan with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud after investigators determined he had sold confidential Verizon customer account data to a criminal hacking organization known as The Community. The Community operated a large-scale SIM-swapping scheme targeting high-value cryptocurrency holders: by bribing carrier insiders to supply personally identifiable information, the group could impersonate victims, seize control of their phone numbers, and intercept every two-factor authentication code protecting their financial accounts. Joseph's role, per the complaint, was supplying that PII from Verizon backend systems in exchange for $3,500 in bribes deposited via PayPal. The account that received the payments was registered to fendleyvzw@gmail.com, an address that combined his first name with vzw, Verizon Wireless's own internal abbreviation. Federal investigators identified him in part through that single email handle. One victim whose number was hijacked through Joseph's data lost approximately $100,000 in cryptocurrency. The broader conspiracy involved nine defendants and traced losses exceeding $2.4 million across the operation, dismantling a network that had exploited the everyday retail employees carriers rely on to guard millions of customer accounts.
