Columbus police had been monitoring 33-year-old Darnell Jones after receiving information from the Toledo Police Department that he was wanted for the abduction and murder of his 13-year-old daughter, Keimani Latigue. On the morning of March 25, 2025, a Columbus SWAT officer exited an unmarked vehicle at the intersection of 2nd and Denison avenues in the Victorian Village neighborhood. Jones, unaware of the officer's presence, was walking on the sidewalk with a walkie-talkie in his left hand and his right hand in the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt. The officer approached Jones, drew his weapon, and ordered him to show his hands. In response, Jones told the officer, "just kill me." The officer repeatedly demanded that Jones reveal his hands, but Jones refused and continued to insist that the officer shoot him. Jones is seen with his right hand in the pocket of his hoodie fiddling with what is later shown to be a revolver. The video also shows Jones squeezing something inside his hoodie and beginning to pull out the gun. At that moment, the SWAT officer fired multiple shots, striking Jones. Officers immediately began to provide aid to him, keeping him in an upright position. At one point, Jones told them, "I don't want to die." A revolver and a walkie-talkie were recovered from the scene. Jones was transported to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in stable condition, and no officers were injured in the incident.
