On April 5, 2024, an off-duty lieutenant with the Marion County Sheriff's Office observed a vehicle driving erratically, swerving across lanes, and nearly rear-ending another motorist. After the suspect performed a sudden maneuver across multiple lanes that forced other vehicles to slam on their brakes, the off-duty lieutenant conducted a stop to check for impairment or a medical emergency. Upon contact, the suspect exhibited slurred speech, smelled strongly of alcohol, and struggled with basic tasks such as putting the vehicle in park and attempting to unlock a phone, eventually opening a stopwatch app instead. When a responding deputy arrived, the suspect admitted, "Yes, I fucked up," and stated they had consumed two drinks earlier that day. Because the suspect was unable to stand safely without assistance, deputies performed seated field sobriety exercises, which the suspect failed to follow correctly, including the finger-to-nose and alphabet recitation tests. During the investigation, the suspect's daughter arrived on the scene and remarked to deputies, "Yea she’s drunk". The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI). This video shows the responding officers’ body-worn camera footage and the events that followed.
