MUNDELEIN, IL - On August 8th, 2020 at 12:24AM, a Mundelein Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on a main road. The officer pulled behind the vehicle and further observed the car not maintaining lane nor using a turn signal when turning right at an intersection. The officer activated his emergency lights and pulled the driver over on State Route 83. Upon making contact with the suspect, the officer observed him having slow speech, a distinct odor of alcoholic beverage from his breath, and having red, blood shot, and glassy eyes. The suspect claimed that he was on the phone with his wife while traveling to a gas station before heading home from drinking with his employees. The officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to which he complied. As the suspect was exiting the vehicle, he used the door to help maintain balance. Once outside the vehicle, the suspect claimed that he was coming from a restaurant and had drank wine before waiting two hours prior to leaving for home. The officer asked the suspect to participate in a field sobriety test to which he complied. For the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the officer observed a lack of smooth pursuit, the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees, and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. The suspect further had to be told multiple times to follow the tip of the pen with his eyes only and not to move his neck. During the walk-and-turn test, the suspect did not remain in the starting position, did not touch heel to toe on several steps, and stopped walking to steady and maintain his balance numerous times. While performing the one leg stand test, the suspect swayed while balancing, did not raise his foot six inches from the ground, and lost count of his numbers several times while counting out loud. At the conclusion of the field sobriety test, the suspect recorded a .110% breath alcohol content (BrAC) for the preliminary breath test. The suspect was then arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and transported to the Mundelein Police Department for further DUI processing.
