Tokyo. December 30, 2000. As the city celebrated the last night of the millennium, someone climbed through the upstairs bathroom window of a small house in Setagaya Ward. Mikio Miyazawa (44), his wife Yasuko (41), their 8-year-old daughter Niina, and their 6-year-old son Rei were home. The killer strangled Rei in his bed. He was six years old. No blood was found on him. Mikio heard something and came upstairs — he was stabbed repeatedly with a sashimi knife the killer had brought. The blade tip broke and lodged in Mikio's skull. The killer used the family's own kitchen knife to kill Yasuko and Niina. All four members of the Miyazawa family were dead. Then the killer stayed. He sat at Mikio's computer and browsed the internet. He opened the refrigerator and ate the family's ice cream. He used the toilet and did not flush. He left his rucksack containing personal items. He slept in the house. As Tokyo counted down to the new millennium outside — he was still there. He left just before dawn on December 31. When investigators arrived — they found what they called a "mountain of evidence." Fingerprints on every surface. DNA from multiple sources including his own blood. Shoe prints throughout the house. His personal belongings. The food he had eaten. His unflushed toilet. His DNA profile was extraordinary: it indicated European maternal lineage and East Asian paternal lineage — suggesting the killer was of mixed heritage, almost certainly not a Japanese national. Not one fingerprint, DNA sample, or personal item matched any person in the Japanese police database. The killer had no prior criminal record. No motive has ever been established. No connection between the killer and the Miyazawa family has ever been found. On December 30, 2025 — the 25th anniversary — Tokyo Metropolitan Police stood at Seijogakuenmae station distributing flyers. Beside them: a mannequin dressed in clothing matching what the suspect is believed to have worn on the night of December 30, 2000. The same appeal. The same platform. The same mannequin. Every year. For 25 years. The case is still open. If you need help — reach out. You are not alone. If you have any information about the Setagaya murders, please contact the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. #setagaya #miyazawa #truecrime #tokyo #japan #unsolved #familymurders #coldcase #GraveFileTV #truecrimedocumentary #setagayamurders #newyear2000 #tokyo2000
