A Sandusky police officer who used an unconventional tool to help save a boy's life did an interview in New York City for a national TV show. Officer Darian Cook was featured on an episode of the A&E Network's "Live PD Presents: PD Cam," which aired Wednesday evening. Cook was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene. When he found the boy bleeding heavily, Cook went back to his cruiser looking for a tourniquet to put on the boy's leg to stop the bleeding — but he couldn't find it. "The tourniquet was in a duty bag and I had a partner with me that night so we had extra equipment that made the tourniquet harder to get to," Cook told Larkin during the interview. Not wanting to waste any time looking for it, Cook picked up a dog leash from his cruiser and used it on the boy's leg as a tourniquet. Firefighters arrived soon after and took the boy to the hospital, where he was treated for his injury. "Was there a point where you we're like, 'Man, this kid could possibly die," Larkin asked Cook. Cook responded: "Absolutely, just prior to saying we needed a tourniquet I realized how serious the injury was. After seeing the amount of blood that he had lost, absolutely." Cook said he knew he had to treat the boy's injury as soon as possible. "If you're in that situation and someone is basically bleeding out, you use whatever you can," Cook said to Larkin. "I cut some seconds off of looking for the tourniquet by just using the dog leash." It's actually the second time Cook has done an interview on A&E about his response to the accidental shooting. About a month after the incident occurred, "Live Rescue" featured Cook as a "Hero of the Week" for his role in saving the boy's life. Cook was interviewed by host Ashleigh Banfield, via Skype, during that show. Sandusky police Chief John Orzech praised Cook for his efforts saving the boy, along with the efforts of local firefighters and Firelands Regional Medical Center staff. "They took some decisive action really quick," Orzech said. The incident "could have been worse, thankfully it wasn't." Orzech said that while it was a difficult incident, the national attention it received is a positive and shows local first responders in a positive light. "The community knows we have people out there performing their jobs under high stress and pressure and doing it very well."
