Early in the morning of June 22, 2024, law enforcement in Wheaton, Illinois, spotted a dark-colored Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed. Radar confirmed the vehicle was going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer pursued the vehicle, noting that it swerved across lane boundaries before a traffic stop was initiated in Glen Ellyn. Upon making contact with the eighteen-year-old driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. After the driver admitted to coming from a party and dropping off friends, the officer conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The driver exhibited multiple clues of impairment during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests. A preliminary breath test registered a .203, leading to the driver's arrest for DUI. A subsequent search of the driver's purse revealed a fraudulent Illinois driver's license, three vaporizers, and a vaporizer cartridge. At the police station, the driver provided a second breath sample resulting in a .207 BrAC. The driver was cited for speeding, improper lane usage, and driving under the influence before being released on their own recognizance and transported home by an officer. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
