Watch the shocking body camera footage that sparked public backlash and led to the resignation of Edgewater police officer Daniel Rippeon. On May 10, shortly after 10 p.m., 22-year-old Paul Wert was simply sitting on a bench waiting for a ride outside a closed CVS when Officer Rippeon pulled up. The officer immediately shouted for Wert's ID. Despite Wert stating, "I didn't break the law, sir," and attempting to leave when his ride arrived, Rippeon declared, "No, you're not". Rippeon then pointed his taser at Wert, reported "one resisting" on his radio, and threatened, "If you move, you're going to get dog bit," before arresting him. Wert was charged with resisting an officer without violence. However, the State Attorney's office dropped the charge on June 4. The circulation of body camera footage of the arrest led to significant public backlash, with Wert's grandfather addressing elected officials. In the wake of the incident, Officer Rippeon was placed on administrative leave and then resigned on June 5. A document signed by acting police chief Charles "Chas" Geiger indicated Rippeon's resignation was a "voluntary separation not involving misconduct," signed just two days after the arrest was reported in the media. An internal affairs investigation into the incident began when Wert was arrested and was still active and ongoing as of June 12.
