Police responded after a man reported that a stranger asked to pray with him outside a business, then suddenly grabbed his money and ran. The victim tried to stop him by grabbing the suspect’s car door handle, but the handle broke off as the suspect drove away. Inside the business, employees told officers the same man had earlier attempted to cash a suspicious $5,000 personal check. Staff refused the transaction, but they had a photo of his ID, which helped police identify him and continue the investigation. When officers located the suspect, the case took an unexpected turn. He admitted he had made a serious mistake, explained that he used the prayer as a distraction, and said he grabbed the victim’s money because he was desperate. The confession became even more unusual when he described crashing a vehicle, using gasoline, starting a fire by accident, suffering burns on his legs, and later making up a fake story about how he got injured. Fire personnel were called to treat his burns before he was transported. This case shows how a suspicious check attempt, a prayer request, and a robbery investigation all connected into one chaotic bodycam arrest.
