According to authorities, 18-year-old Armando Vinaja allegedly stole an ambulance from Palestine Regional Medical Center and fled from officers, reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Officers reported seeing Vinaja hanging partially outside the moving ambulance while driving erratically during the pursuit. Investigators later learned that Vinaja had earlier been transported to the hospital after a caller reported him driving erratically before stopping and lying in a roadside ditch. After being taken to the emergency room, Vinaja reportedly left the hospital and took the ambulance without authorization. Police described Vinaja as displaying unusual behavior during the arrest, noting a blank stare, erratic movements, and yelling as he was removed from the vehicle. Officers believed he was under the influence of an unknown substance at the time of the incident. The pursuit came to an end when the ambulance struck a curb after turning onto Park Avenue, disabling the vehicle. Vinaja was taken into custody and later transported to the Anderson County Jail, where he refused field sobriety testing and was placed in a restraint chair due to continued disruptive behavior.
