The footage presented in this video is for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended to ridicule, shame, or defame any individuals involved. All content complies with applicable laws and is shared in accordance with fair use principles, where applicable. Viewer discretion is advised. On the 18th of December 2020, Australian Capital Territory Police officers (AFP) engaged in a small pursuit of a male drunk Driver who ran a red light in an intersection. Officers dragged the unnamed driver out of the car, placed him in handcuffs, and left him lying in a drain. Officers requested back up because the driver was almost limp due to the intoxication by alcohol. Audio captures the moments where officers call the Driver names and obscenities while placing him under arrest. As seen on bodycam footage, officers start testing the Driver for any traces of alcohol on his breath. A machine was able to assess that he had alcohol on his breath. However, a secondary machine was needed to measure how much BAC was in his system. Other officers arrived shortly after the first test of alcohol. During the secondary testing stage, the officer conducting the test deemed that the Driver was not complying with the direction to blow into the breathalyser device (which is an offence.) Another officer was caught on audio saying some horrible choice words to the Driver, causing the already distressed Driver to panic and act erratically. All this footage was played in a Canberra Magistrates Court in July 2022; Magistrate James Lawton had some of his own choice words to the officers on the scene that night. "(The pair of officers)were aggressive and treated the man in a cruel and degrading manner." Magistrate Lawton also said, "They behaved deplorably by leaving him face down in the gutter." The Magistrate denounced the actions while in court. It is believed that the officers who took part in the abuse were internally investigated and punished (it is unknown if any were stood down.)
