This video breaks down a midnight crash investigation in Middletown, New Jersey. Officers arrived to find a white Nissan Pathfinder abandoned after it disregarded a stop sign and crashed directly into a guardrail. The operator was located in a nearby driveway and admitted to returning from a local steakhouse, consuming alcohol, and using a cell phone while driving. Officers noted the driver had glassy eyes and a pungent odor of alcoholic beverages. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were conducted, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, walk and turn, and one-leg stand. After struggling with balance, swaying, and failing to walk heel-to-toe, the operator was arrested. The suspect became slightly belligerent and combative before being placed in the patrol vehicle. At police headquarters, breath samples yielded a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.088%. The driver was issued multiple traffic summonses for driving under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, use of a hand-held wireless telephone, and speeding across a sidewalk. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
