Officers arrived at the intersection of Jefferson and Stryker to find a heavily damaged PT Cruiser with deployed airbags. The driver took full responsibility for the crash immediately but showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Due to the freezing one-degree weather, officers moved the driver inside a nearby restaurant to conduct field sobriety testing on a level, warm surface. Despite the driver claiming to have consumed only one drink, a partially empty glass bottle of whiskey was located on the floorboard of the vehicle near the center console. The driver displayed multiple clues of impairment during the horizontal gaze nystagmus and one-leg stand tests. Following a refusal to provide a preliminary breath sample, the driver was taken into custody, processed with minor cooperation issues during fingerprinting, and issued several citations before being released. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
