On June 1, 2021, officers in Paris Texas responded to a single-vehicle accident near 34th Street and Clement Road. The driver had fled, but officers traced the vehicle to its owner, Colton “Coco” Carico, on Smallwood Road in Reno, Texas. When officers attempted to contact Carico at his residence, he appeared at the door armed with a rifle and was shot by Officer Derek Bristow, resulting in paralysis. Colton Carico alleges the use of excessive force and has filed a lawsuit seeking a jury trial and $10 million in damages. The City of Paris and the involved officer are defending their actions, asserting that Carico presented a clear danger by brandishing a rifle. The Texas Rangers concluded their investigation into the shooting and deemed it justified. Consequently, Officer Bristow was exonerated by a Lamar County Grand Jury of any misconduct after the Attorney General of Texas's office presented the case. Colton “Coco” Carico's lawsuit against the City of Paris and Officer Derek Bristow was dismissed. The court, on March 14, 2024, ruled in favor of the defendants by granting a motion for summary judgment, thereby dismissing Carico’s claims with prejudice. As a result, Carico's plea for $10 million in damages was rejected, and the lawsuit was concluded. #police #texas #cops
