The car headed into the Centro Ybor Parking Garage on 15th Street. It scraped a curb. He flipped on his lights for a stop. The driver pulled up by the gate. He approached and met Sandy, the driver. While talking, he saw signs of impairment. Alcohol hung on her breath. She said she had been texting. A friend waited for her. She owned up to drinks that night. He suspected drunk driving. She stepped out for sobriety tests. First came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. Next, the Walk and Turn. She missed heel-to-toe steps. Her turn went wrong. Last was the One Leg Stand. She lifted her foot wrong. She counted off sequence. Traffic violations piled up. Impairment clues showed. Alcohol smell lingered. She admitted the drinks. Tests failed bad. Officer Barlaug arrested her for DUI. He took Sandy to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. There, she skipped the breath test. Cops charged her under 316.193(1).
