A routine burglary call in Fort Worth, Texas, escalated into an exchange of gunfire after a suspect allegedly opened fire on a civilian response officer, injuring him in the eye and triggering a major search across the surrounding neighborhood. On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at approximately 11:40 a.m., Civilian Response Unit Officer Edward Zapata was dispatched to a reported burglary at a residence in the 3500 block of Juliet Lane. While Officer Zapata was handling the call, a man later identified as 39-year-old Angel Cantu was reportedly positioned across the street with a firearm. According to the Fort Worth Police Department, Cantu fired toward the officer, causing shrapnel to strike Officer Zapata in the left eye. Officer Zapata called for assistance, and responding officers arrived at the scene. The suspect allegedly fired at the officers, who returned fire. He was then seen retreating into a residence before leaving through the back door and jumping over a fence. Additional officers established a perimeter and searched the surrounding area. When officers checked the suspect’s residence, they did not locate him, prompting the search to expand into the nearby neighborhood. For public safety, several schools in the area were placed on lockdown. Residents were also advised through social media notifications to remain inside their homes and secure themselves. The search continued for several hours. At approximately 5:40 p.m., officers took Cantu into custody as he emerged from a wooded area near Riverside and Brittany Place. A firearm believed to have been involved in the incident was recovered. Officer Zapata was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later released. He was expected to undergo another surgery to remove shrapnel from his eye. The incident involved an injured officer, an exchange of gunfire, a neighborhood-wide search and the eventual arrest of the suspect.
