A high-speed chase with multiple law enforcement agencies ended in a crash in Gainesville Tuesday morning, shutting down a major roadway. Brandon Baker, 34, is facing multiple felony charges after being arrested for stealing a box truck in Tampa and leading the Florida Highway Patrol and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office before ending near Piccadilly Apartments along Southwest 34th Street. The chase began in Tampa where Baker is accused of stealing a 2015 Isuzu box truck before he began traveling north on Interstate 75, according to an FHP news release. While still in Marion County, troopers were notified that Baker was approaching the Alachua County line, where they attempted a traffic stop. Baker managed to cross traffic onto the southbound lane, still traveling north, the release said. Alachua County deputies soon joined in on the pursuit and also unsuccessfully attempted to stop the vehicle. Baker crashed into several vehicles during the pursuit, including law enforcement vehicles, the release said. Around 7:30 a.m., FHP said that Baker traveled to the 2100 block of Southwest 34th Street where he exited the truck and began fleeing on foot. He was soon taken into custody shortly after. Though no serious injuries have been reported, Baker and a trooper did have minor injuries, said FHP spokesman Lt. Patrick Riordan. The incident resulted in the north and south lanes of Southwest 34th Street being blocked off. FHP added that Baker had also been involved in a carjacking incident prior to stealing the box truck.
