The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage from a recent deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 42-year-old Elroy Clarke. In the video, deputies initially used several de-escalation methods while speaking with Clarke, who reportedly resisted arrest on an outstanding warrant related to a trespassing charge. Sheriff Bill Prummell explained that Clarke and a guest involved in the disturbance held "sovereign ideologies," believing they were not subject to legal authority. Despite multiple attempts to subdue Clarke using tasers, pepper spray, and beanbag rounds, he continued to resist, even overpowering deputies. When Clarke charged at a deputy, the deputy responded with lethal force, firing 14 shots. Sheriff Prummell, speaking at a press conference, described the incident as tragic, emphasizing the deputies’ attempts to avoid a fatal outcome and expressing sorrow for the impact on Clarke's children.
