Following a failed field sobriety test and subsequent arrest, an impaired driver is processed, revealing a BAC double the legal limit. Around 3:08 AM, an officer initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle driving without headlights and exhibiting erratic patterns. Upon making contact, the driver displayed clear signs of incoherence, and a distinct odor of alcohol was detected from within the vehicle, immediately raising suspicion of impairment. Subsequently, the officer offered the individual the opportunity to perform a series of standardized field sobriety exercises. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, the officer observed a lack of smooth pursuit and distinct nystagmus. The One Leg Stand test saw the driver begin prematurely, fail to raise their foot properly, and struggle with balance, counting to 30 after restarting at 1. Furthermore, the Walk and Turn test revealed an inability to walk heel-to-toe and an incorrect number of steps, while the alphabet recitation was performed by singing and dancing, contrary to instructions. Based on these observations, inconsistent statements, and the inability to adequately complete the exercises, the individual was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. The driver was then transported to a facility where an Alcotest revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, which is double the legal limit of 0.08%. Following this, the driver was transported to police headquarters, where mugshots were taken and necessary paperwork was completed, before ultimately being released to a sober adult who signed a potential liability waiver. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
