A Sparks Police traffic stop turns into an ambush when the driver opens fire through the window, striking an officer before fleeing into a residential neighborhood. The incident escalates into home invasions, a hostage situation, multiple gunfights, and a SWAT standoff that leaves three law enforcement officers struck by gunfire. On March 29, 2024, Sparks Police stopped a Ford Expedition with no license plates in Sparks, Nevada. As the officer approached, 34-year-old Anthony Wade opened fire from inside the vehicle. The wounded officer returned fire, and Wade fled before crashing into a U-Haul. He abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. Police soon received reports of Wade entering occupied homes while armed. During one encounter, a resident fought back with a knife before Wade fled again. Investigators later determined that Wade entered another residence and took a woman hostage. Officers unknowingly encountered the hostage while Wade was concealed inside her vehicle. When officers later returned to the residence, Wade opened fire from inside, striking a Washoe County Sheriff’s deputy and another Sparks Police officer. Officers returned fire and rescued the hostage as Wade escaped through the rear of the home. Wade eventually barricaded himself inside another residence. After hours of attempted negotiations, SWAT entered the garage. Wade opened fire again, with one round striking an officer’s service weapon. SWAT returned fire and withdrew. Officers later reentered the garage and located Wade deceased. Three law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire during the incident, and all three survived. Investigators recovered a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun equipped with an extended magazine. The incident lasted approximately eight and a half hours. This case study examines the incident using publicly released police bodycam footage, dashcam video, surveillance footage, cellphone video, 911 calls, dispatch audio, witness recordings, and investigative findings, when available. Analysis and commentary are provided from the perspective of a former federal agent, former law enforcement officer, and digital forensics examiner.
