On September 23, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m., San Diego Police officers responded to Fay Elementary School after a 9-1-1 call reported a man trespassing on school grounds while children were present. The suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Huy Ly, was described as being armed with a firearm and a knife. When officers arrived, they located Ly near the school. Officers observed what appeared to be a gun in his waistband and attempted to communicate with him in both English and Vietnamese, but Ly did not respond to their commands. Over several minutes, officers tried to de-escalate the situation, using less-lethal beanbag rounds and deploying a K-9 unit, but Ly continued to refuse commands. Ly then fled through an alley toward Orange Avenue, retrieving an object from his waistband that appeared to be a firearm. As he turned toward pursuing officers while still holding the object, Officer Ruiz and Officer Basson discharged their service weapons. Officer Basson then approached and kicked the apparent firearm away before officers provided life-saving medical aid, including CPR, until San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel arrived. Ly was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators later determined the firearm was a replica, and a knife was recovered in the alley where he was first confronted. 0:00 - Preview 0:12 - Description of events 0:30 - 911 call 1:31 - Officer #1 bodycam 3:43 - Surveillance camera 4:06 - Shooting 4:47 - Officer #2 bodycam ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video may contain footage and audio that some viewers could find disturbing.
