On September 23, 2024, California Highway Patrol officers on Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway) in Los Angeles were overtaken by a Mitsubishi Eclipse SUV traveling at 100 mph. The driver, Jose Castaneda, who was intoxicated, refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over for speeding. Castaneda accelerated to speeds over 110 mph until the SUV began to emit smoke on Highway 101 Northbound near Vineland Avenue, Castaneda then pulled over to the shoulder and surrendered. The SUV caught fire as Castaneda was exiting the vehicle and being apprehended.
