A 12-year-old boy is accused of stealing a vehicle and leading authorities on a chase in New Mexico. Deputies received several calls of a reckless driver around noon on Sunday. The 12-year-old was driving a blue-grey small SUV. "The SUV was driven by a juvenile who was running people off the road driving recklessly," said Doña Ana County Sheriff Sergent Dason Allen. Allen said the juvenile stopped in a parking lot, picked up three other younger boys. “We had attempted to Bolo for the vehicle for approximately I would say 30 minutes and one of our deputies made contact with the vehicle on Doña Ana road, caught up to the vehicle on Armstrong and El Camino Real where engaged his lights to initiate the traffic stop and then the vehicle continued to flee northbound on El Camino Real," Allen said. The chase continued through the northern part of Las Cruces until the vehicle got into Thorpe and I-25, proceeded southbound on I-25 to Highway 70. The vehicle exited off the exit, it made a left hand turn to go eastbound on 70, continued east on 70, got off on the Del Rey exit, went all the way down to Bataan Memorial East and Del Rey and made a right over to north rise and then into the parking lot of Peter Piper Pizza. The vehicle stopped and the three boys exited the vehicle and the driver continued back through the motel parking lot then across the K-Mart parking lot. Officers found and got in contact with the three boys that had gotten out of the vehicle. “The deputy continued to follow the vehicle through the K-Mart parking lot, the vehicle came up to Bataan East. Bataan East is a one-direction road and it can only travel east, this vehicle went west into oncoming traffic, when the deputy finally caught up to it, right as you exit off of I-25 onto 70 and Del Rey, he observed the vehicle had went head-on with another vehicle. At that point is when we took the driver of the suspect vehicle into custody," said Allen. The 12-year-old boy was not injured. Officials said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the head-on crash was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He also said there were children in the victim's car as well. Deputies said a 9-millimeter handgun was found in the area where the three other juveniles got out of the vehicle and fled to the parking lot of the Peter Piper Pizza. Officials said 9-millimeter casings and bullets were found on the 12-year-old boy who was driving the vehicle. Officials said the vehicle was stolen and didn't have details of who is the owner. “12 years old juvenile driving, so that’s not something that’s common that we deal with within this department," said Allen. “He did have an actual felony warrant and the charge on that felony warrant for conspiracy to commit a burglary of a vehicle, so the juvenile was booked on that warrant along with the charges of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer and was charged with receiving and transferring a stolen motor vehicle," said Allen. The 12-year-old remains in custody. The other juveniles, ages 12 to 17, were taken into custody but have since been released to their parents or guardians.
