Incident Information: On September 6th, 2024, Michigan State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop in Mackinac County on a stolen vehicle. One of the occupants, Dakota Varana, threatened the troopers and had to be physically restrained while at the hospital. During a search of the vehicle, troopers recovered 42 grams of cocaine and 254 grams of methamphetamine. Despite these charges, Dakota was released the same day on a personal recognizance bond and enlisted his ex-girlfriend, Jane, to pick him up after a nearly four-hour drive. Once together, Dakota refused to let Jane leave, holding her against her will for nearly two days. During this time, Dakota and unidentified accomplices from Wayne County stole power tools and other merchandise from multiple Home Depot stores. While stopped for gas, Jane discreetly passed a note to an employee, who alerted both Jane’s mother and the authorities. Livingston County deputies coordinated with the Warren and Westland Police Departments, launching a multi-jurisdictional search. The following day, officers with the Westland Police Special Investigations Unit located the wanted vehicle. When a uniformed officer attempted a traffic stop, Dakota led them on a pursuit. His reckless driving eventually disabled the vehicle, forcing him to flee on foot, where he was quickly apprehended. Dakota pleaded no contest to numerous felony charges and is currently incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Jane was unharmed.
