At about 10:42 p.m., Officer Koster drove to Bingham Lane after a report of a white SUV behaving oddly. He saw nothing at first. Then a white 2019 Volvo XC90 drew his attention. The vehicle weaved near Bingham Lane and Village Road, so Koster followed it. He stopped the Volvo near Louisville Lane and Nashville Lane. The driver was Danielle. While speaking with Danielle, Officer Koster smelled a strong cannabis odor coming from the vehicle. Danielle appeared upset and said she had argued with her husband earlier that night. Believing she might be impaired, Koster requested another officer. Officer Flores arrived soon after, and both officers suspected Danielle was under the influence. She was told to leave the car and complete field sobriety tests. Koster began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Danielle then tried the Walk and Turn but failed to touch heel-to-toe during the exercise. She also lifted her arms to steady herself, which the officer viewed as a sign of difficulty. During the One Leg Stand, she struggled to raise her foot properly and put it down too soon. On the Modified Romberg Balance Test, Danielle estimated that 30 seconds had passed when only 25 seconds had gone by. Officer Koster said the Lack of Convergence test also showed signs of impairment. After the tests, Danielle took a breath test at Koster's request. The result showed a BAC of 0.00%. Koster believed cannabis had impaired her, however, and arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence. Officer Flores handcuffed and searched Danielle before placing her in the patrol car. Koster took Danielle to Mercyhealth Hospital for blood and urine testing. She refused to provide the samples, so officers brought her back to the Crystal Lake Police Department. Police contacted Judge Altman and requested a warrant. The judge approved it, but Danielle still refused to comply. Officers searched her vehicle and found illegal items inside, giving them grounds for additional charges. After her paperwork was completed, Danielle was released. Her court date is set for February 13, 2024. She faces a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, along with allegations that she resisted an officer.
