On October 27, 2024, around 6:45 PM, deputies were managing traffic control at an intersection following a vehicle crash. During this time, they observed a dark-colored pickup truck creating unusually large gaps between vehicles, seemingly avoiding close contact with law enforcement. Deputies approached the truck to instruct the driver to move forward. Upon reaching the vehicle, they found a man, the sole occupant, seated in the driver's seat with the window down. They requested that he pull forward in the traffic line. While interacting with the driver, deputies detected a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. When questioned, the driver admitted to having "just a little" marijuana and later revealed he did not have a medical marijuana card. Deputies directed him to move his vehicle forward. However, as the driver was instructed to pull over to the side, he instead drove forward, maneuvered around the vehicle in front, and attempted a U-turn. Deputies signaled for him to stop, suspecting he was trying to drive through the crash site. Despite their commands, the driver continued, attempting to bypass the vehicle ahead. Trooper Fontenot of the Florida Highway Patrol, who was assisting at the crash scene, witnessed the situation and initiated a pursuit with lights and sirens.
