Case Summary — Phoenix Police / DPS Incident 2026.02.27: Phoenix police officers responded near 19 West Durango Street to assist Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers during a vehicle stop involving a fleeing suspect. By the time officers arrived, DPS had already used a specialized device to disable the suspect’s car, but the driver continued trying to escape. After getting out of the vehicle and then climbing back in, the driver tried to drive away while the car was still tethered to a DPS unit, causing the vehicle to strike both a Phoenix officer and a DPS trooper. Later, officers opened fire during the confrontation. After the shooting, the driver’s foot remained on the gas pedal, causing the tires to keep spinning. A Tactical Support Bureau unit then used an Arwen 37mm less-lethal launcher to check whether it was safe to approach. Officers then removed the man from the vehicle, and Phoenix Fire Department personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The shooting is now under criminal and administrative investigation.
