On October 6, 2024, Las Cruces Police Sgt. Chavez noticed a vehicle parked in the entrance of a parking lot and stopped to perform a welfare check. Earlier in the evening, several callers had reported the same vehicle driving erratically, but officers were unable to previously locate the vehicle. Sgt. Chavez made contact with the 26-year-old woman, who was passed out behind the wheel. Her 3 children, ages 4, 6, and 8, were asleep in the backseat. The vehicle's rear hatch was wide open. After the woman woke up, she was disoriented and thought she was somewhere else. Sgt. Chavez eventually got her to exit her vehicle so that she could perform standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests, the woman was placed under arrest for Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor. She refused to provide a breath sample and she was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Her complete list of charges is discussed at the end of the video. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
