NORMAL, IL - At 2:53AM on January 1st, 2020, Normal police responded to a verbal argument called in by tenants regarding a couple arguing on the night of New Year's. The police arrived on scene and asked the passenger to get out of the vehicle. Shortly after, another officer ordered the driver of the vehicle to step out of her car. The suspect refused and was arrested for obstruction of justice. The suspect was informed that the passenger of the vehicle, her boyfriend, claimed he had marijuana on his person which gave the officers probably cause to search the vehicle. Per department policy, there can be no persons in the car while a vehicle is searched. The search of the vehicle yielded no illegal drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, the suspect began crying and asking for her mom to pick her up while she was being searched. The suspect claimed that following an argument, her boyfriend pursued her and got into her vehicle. The suspect told the officer that she considered leaving, but felt impaired, so she called her mother for a ride home. The suspect claimed that the car was running because she was cold and was using the heat to stay warm. Upon arrival at the station, the suspect was searched by a female officer. The arresting officer then proceeded with a field sobriety test (FST). During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect was unable to smoothly follow the officer's finger. At maximum deviation, the officer observed jerking movement in the suspect's eyes. The suspect next performed the walk-and-turn test with proficiency, but missed heel to toes on one of her steps. The suspect asked several questions throughout the demonstration. The suspect performed the one leg stand test while the officer was demonstrating the exercise and was told to wait until instructed to do so. The suspect performed the test with proficiency. Following the FST, the officer began investigating the suspect's involvement in the domestic disturbance. The suspect told the officer she had four shots starting at 10PM and said she had smoked marijuana two days prior. The officer was again told by the suspect that she had no intentions on driving and going home. The suspect told the officer that the she did "great" in performing the tests, but expressed concerns that she felt too impaired to drive. The officer administered a preliminary breath test to the suspect who blew .154% BAC. The suspect was then booked for driving under the influence (DUI).
