On August 16, 2024, Middletown Township police were conducting a DUI checkpoint on Route 35. Patrolman Van Schaack stopped a 39-year-woman and asked her for her driver's license. The police report indicates that while she was trying to locate her license, Patrolman Van Schaack detected an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The woman was sent to a secondary area where she was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests, she was arrested for DUI. At the police station, she refused to submit to an evidential breath test. She was given summonses for driving while under the influence of liquor, reckless driving, and refusal to submit to chemical testing. She was released to a sober party later in the evening. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
