On June 6, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Casper Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Pay It Forward Drive in Casper, Wyoming. When they arrived, the victim told officers she had been assaulted. Moments later, they encountered the suspect — 26-year-old Army veteran Trae Stewart Spurlock — sitting on a balcony with an AR-15 rifle lying at his side. For nearly 15 minutes, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and coax Spurlock away from his weapon. Tension rose as Spurlock spoke openly about being “over everything” and even mentioned that “suicide by cop doesn’t seem like a bad idea.” When officers finally tried to take him into custody, the standoff escalated in an instant. Bodycam footage captures the intense moments as officers faced a dangerous decision. In the aftermath, Spurlock was shot multiple times, life-saving efforts failed, and he died at the scene. The incident was investigated by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, and Natrona County District Attorney Dan Itzen ultimately ruled that no criminal charges would be filed against Officer William Maples. The coroner’s office classified Spurlock’s death as a homicide — a medical term meaning one person caused another’s death — though the shooting was legally deemed justified. This video breaks down the bodycam footage, the officer’s actions, and the larger questions it raises: Could a negotiator or different tactics have led to another outcome?
