-Austin, TX. -October 22, 2023. Austin Police Department officers responded to a call of an armed individual threatening his family in a North Austin neighborhood Sunday night, leading to a fatal confrontation on scene. According to APD Interim Chief Robin Henderson, they received a 911 call around 7:55 p.m. reporting an intoxicated man threatening his wife and child with a firearm in the 9000 block of Northgate Blvd. The first APD unit was dispatched and began responding within two minutes. Officers received additional information en route, indicating the man was holding his wife in one hand and a gun in the other. Upon arriving at approximately 8:02 p.m., officers located the apartment in question and attempted to make contact with the suspect, issuing commands in both English and Spanish. At 8:34 p.m., the man appeared on the balcony with a gun. Officers gave verbal commands, which the man ignored, pointing his gun at them instead. Officers responded by deploying a less-lethal option and also firing their service weapons. The suspect retreated back into the apartment, leading police to secure the area and request a SWAT response. Before SWAT arrived, officers believed a female and a child were in imminent danger and made entry into the apartment at 8:44 p.m. Once inside, the suspect fired upon the officers, who returned fire, striking the man. Officers were then able to safely remove the woman and child from the apartment. They also provided medical aid to the suspect until EMS arrived. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. Four APD officers and one Department of Public Safety Trooper were involved in the incident. All officers have been placed on administrative duty pending two concurrent investigations. One will be an administrative probe by internal affairs, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight. The second will be a criminal investigation led by APD's special investigations unit in collaboration with Texas DPS Rangers and consultation from the Travis County District Attorney's office. The incident was captured on body-worn cameras, footage from which is expected to be released within 10 business days, per APD policy.
