On February 17, 2022, Philip James Layfield — a personal-injury attorney and founder of Layfield & Barrett, a multi-office firm operating across California and Arizona — was sentenced to 144 months in federal prison after a jury convicted him of 22 felony counts including 19 counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, and tax offenses following a 13-day trial in August 2021. U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald, who described Layfield's conduct as "appalling" and "sheer evil," imposed the sentence after investigators revealed that Layfield had systematically looted his client trust account across multiple years, stealing from seriously injured clients whose settlement funds he was legally obligated to hold in trust. In the case that defined the investigation, Layfield negotiated a $3.9 million settlement on behalf of a man struck by a car in Orange County, then misappropriated approximately $2 million of that recovery for personal expenses and to pay back earlier clients he had already stolen from — a Ponzi scheme running through his own trust account. Before federal agents could close in, Layfield fled to Costa Rica, having borrowed $700,000 on false pretenses days before his departure and used a portion of those funds to purchase and ship horses to his overseas ranch. The accident victim at the center of the case — catastrophically injured, unable to work, and wholly dependent on his recovery — received just $25,000 of his $3.9 million settlement.
