It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On the evening of June 10, 2025, around 10:00 PM, Officer Christian Albanese from the Westfield Police Department spotted a 2019 Subaru Ascent weaving wildly near E Broad Street and Wells Street. Another person had already dialed 911 about a reckless driver there. He flipped on his lights and pulled the car over. He approached the driver, Kathleen Morales. Later, Kathleen explained to the officers that she had just left a CoDA meeting in Scotch Plains. While chatting with her, Officer Albanese caught her slurred words and watched her fumble for her papers. Suspecting she was impaired, he asked her to step out once Sergeant Richard Gil showed up to help. She agreed to try some field sobriety tests. Out of the car, she confessed to drinking alcohol that day. Officer Nicholas Bagan kicked things off with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Then Officer Albanese had her do the One Leg Stand. She couldn't lift her foot like he told her to. Her wild driving, the smell of booze, her own admission, and her poor showing on the tests led Officer Albanese to arrest her for DUI. They towed her car for a 12-hour hold under John's Law. They took her to the Westfield Police station for booking. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She said yes to giving breath samples. The Alcotest showed her blood alcohol at 0.23%—almost three times the 0.08% limit. She also owned up to drinks at Darby Road Public House in Scotch Plains that night. Once processing wrapped up, they let her go to a sober friend until court, after signing the liability warning for her. Officer Albanese handed her tickets for DUI, reckless driving, careless driving, blocking other cars, not staying right, and straying from marked lanes.
