On Sunday, 03/22/2026, at approximately 2119 hours, I, Trooper Mareno, was patrolling the area of Hwy 174 and Hempstead 1040 when I observed a vehicle that appeared to be traveling above the posted speed limit. I confirmed the vehicle’s speed with my rear-mounted radar at 66 miles per hour in a posted 55-mile-per-hour zone. The suspect vehicle was later identified as a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze bearing Arkansas license plate BGA73J. The suspect vehicle was traveling south on Hwy 174 as I was traveling north. I performed a U-turn and activated my emergency lights and sirens to pursue the vehicle. As I attempted to catch up to the suspect vehicle—reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour—I observed that the driver made no attempt to stop or slow down. The suspect failed to yield to my emergency lights and sirens and continued south on Hwy 174 at a high rate of speed. I notified dispatch that I was in pursuit and continued following the vehicle to the intersection of Hwy 174 and Hwy 355. As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection, it failed to obey the stop sign, continued through the intersection, and crashed into the metal guardrail at Bethany Baptist Church in Spring Hill, Arkansas. Upon arriving at the crash scene, I gave commands to the driver—later identified as Daviunta Purifoy—to exit the vehicle and raise his hands. Purifoy exited the vehicle, stated that he could not see due to an injury to his eye, and laid on the ground. The passenger, Giselle Zarate, exited the vehicle, laid on the ground, and complained of chest pain. After ensuring the scene was safe, I placed Purifoy into handcuffs without incident. I then conducted a search of his person incident to arrest. During the search, I located a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana in his right shorts pocket. I collected the suspected marijuana for evidence. No other items of evidentiary value were found on Purifoy’s person. I then secured him in the back of my patrol car. After securing Purifoy, I checked on Zarate’s condition. Zarate stated she was in significant pain and reported difficulty breathing. I requested Pafford EMS to respond to the scene. Pafford EMS arrived and transported Zarate to Saint Michael’s Hospital in Texarkana, Texas. After speaking further with Purifoy, he stated that his head was hurting. Purifoy had sustained a gash above his right eye during the crash. He was released from custody and transported to Saint Michael’s Hospital in Texarkana, Texas, by Pafford EMS. M&M Wrecker responded to the scene and towed the suspect vehicle to their impound lot. An inventory of the vehicle revealed two Apple iPhones. No other items of value were located in the vehicle. I will be seeking warrants on Purifoy for Fleeing by Vehicle with Substantial Risk of Injury or Death. Crash report number 202604765ASP.
