On April 13, 2025, at approximately 7 p.m. Police Officer Rose Kanan was on Fourth Street when she observed a car being operated erratically. She saw the vehicle turn onto Jefferson Street and speed up causing the tires to screech. The vehicle also swerved, narrowly missing several parked cars. The officer pulled the car over on the 200 block of Adams Streetand as she approached, noticed a bottle of Jameson whiskey in the driver’s side console. The driver, later identified as 37-year-old male of Hoboken, appeared to be intoxicated, was slurring his speech, and emitting a strong odor of alcohol from his breath. Officer Andrias Bonilla arrived on the scene. He refused to get out of his vehicle for a field sobriety test. Sgt. Roary Miller, Sgt. Daniel Grossi, and Police Officers John Rodriguez and Donovan Ortiz arrived on the scene to assist. He was removed from the vehicle and continued to be combative. He was placed under arrest and transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters. A search of the vehicle located a bottle of whiskey, which was about three-quarters empty. He refused to submit a breath sample. He was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing the administration of the law. He was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, refusal for breath test, reckless driving, open container of alcohol, careless driving, and driving with a suspended license. As per John’s law, he was released from custody after 12 hours. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
