It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On June 5, 2024, around 9:56 PM, Officers Bryan Sousa and Louis Bone from the Township of Union Police responded to Halsey Street. They got a call about a parked, unoccupied car blocking the road. When they arrived, they saw a 2021 Toyota Corolla sitting across the street. Inside, a woman was asleep in the driver’s seat. She was identified as Lauren. She told the officers she was waiting for her fiancé to come back. While talking to Lauren, the officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from her. They also saw signs she might be impaired. Lauren admitted she had two White Claws earlier that night. Based on these signs, the officers asked her to step out of the car and do some field sobriety tests. Officer Sousa started with the Walk and Turn test. During this test, Lauren struggled. She couldn’t keep her heel touching her toe, and she moved her arms too much for balance. Next, they had her do the One Leg Stand. She failed this test too. She kept putting her foot down and couldn’t stand on one leg properly. They stopped the test early for safety reasons. Lauren showed clear signs of being intoxicated. She smelled of alcohol, admitted drinking earlier, and failed the sobriety tests. She was placed under arrest for driving while drunk. Her car was impounded for at least 12 hours, as required by law. The officers took Lauren to the police station for more checks. They read her the standard statement for drivers and she agreed to give breath samples. After waiting for 20 minutes, she was driven to the Springfield Police Department. There, they performed the Alcotest, which showed her blood alcohol content was 0.25%. This is more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%. Once the test was done, Lauren was brought back to the Union police station. After processing, she was released with a court date set. Officer Sousa issued her four tickets: operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and obstruction of traffic. Court records show that on November 19, 2024, Lauren was found guilty of driving drunk. Because of this, she had to use an ignition interlock device for three months and spend 12 hours at an alcohol awareness program. She also paid $383 in fines.
