FULL REPORT: While patrolling the area of S. Pleasantburg Drive in reference to a murder investigation, I observed a vehicle matching the suspect description: a red/orange Jeep Renegade traveling northbound toward Greenville City. I conducted a U-turn on S. Pleasantburg Drive to get behind the vehicle. The Jeep immediately turned right onto Betty Spencer Drive at a high rate of speed. It then stopped past the clearly marked stop bar at Betty Spencer Drive and Parkins Mill Road, in the middle of the intersection, disregarding the stop sign and nearly striking oncoming traffic. The vehicle corrected into the proper lane but continued to struggle to maintain control. I initiated a traffic stop on the Jeep displaying SC tag UAE146 by activating my patrol vehicle’s emergency blue lights and sirens. The vehicle turned onto E. Parkins Mill Road and Quail Hill Drive before stopping, though the driver kept the brakes applied and failed to place the vehicle in park. Despite repeated commands to shut off the vehicle, the driver did not comply. At this time, I observed a heavy metal object, possibly a firearm, being thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle. The driver then fled, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. Sgt. Decker (C04) authorized a forcible stop when feasible. During the pursuit, the suspect repeatedly crossed over double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and disregarded multiple traffic control devices, including stop signs at E. Parkins Mill Road/Cleveland Street Extension and E. Parkins Mill Road/Isbell Lane, as well as a red light at E. Parkins Mill Road/Laurens Road. The pursuit continued onto Verdae Boulevard at speeds between 60–80 mph. At Verdae Boulevard and Parallel Parkway, the suspect conducted two U-turns, first back toward Laurens Road, then again toward Woodruff Road. At this point, I engaged the vehicle’s rear driver-side panel in an attempt to perform a forcible stop. The vehicle briefly turned sideways but corrected and continued. I engaged the vehicle again, after which Sgt. Rivera (C03) positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the suspect while I blocked the rear, successfully stopping the Jeep. The suspect, matching the murder suspect description (Black male, black shirt with red stripe), exited the vehicle on foot. Believing the suspect could still be armed and posed a danger to the public, I deployed my department-issued Taser X-26P (SN: [redacted]) in lieu of deadly force. The deployment was successful, and the suspect fell to the ground. Officers from the Greenville Police Department assisted with securing the suspect, while Deputy Weems (C43) conducted a search incident to arrest. I recovered my Taser cartridge from the scene. Forensics Officer Godfrey (929) processed the area. The Jeep Renegade was towed by Hale’s Towing to the service center. The suspect was transported to the Law Enforcement Center by Deputy Weems for further investigation by detectives. Sentenced to 28 years for voluntary manslaughter (plea deal) will be released in 2045… case closed.
