Around 2:00 a.m. on October 1, a Louisiana State Police (LSP) trooper initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 431 and Highway 935 for a burned-out taillight. The driver, later identified as Brandon Nicholas, was asked to step behind the vehicle to discuss the issue and then retrieve his driver’s license from inside the car. When questioned, Nicholas denied having any weapons in the vehicle. However, according to LSP, Nicholas was a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. As Nicholas opened the driver’s door, the trooper reported smelling marijuana and spotting a handgun on the floorboard. The trooper attempted to detain Nicholas, but he resisted and reached toward the gun. As the trooper tried to gain control of his hands, Nicholas shifted the car into drive and began to accelerate while the trooper was still partially inside the vehicle. Fearing Nicholas would gain control of the pistol, the trooper drew his firearm and fired several shots while disengaging from the moving car. During the struggle, the trooper’s body camera became dislodged. Nicholas drove roughly a mile and a half before coming to a stop. The trooper followed and ordered him to exit the vehicle. Additional troopers, deputies, and EMS arrived soon after. Nicholas was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators later discovered Nicholas’ firearm in a ditch between the initial stop and where the vehicle stopped. Forensic testing conducted by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab confirmed the gun was directly linked to Nicholas. 0:00 - Intro 0:11 - Dashcam footage 1:17 - Dashcam footage 2:40 - Shooting 2:51 - Shooting view from dashcam 4:00 - Aftermath Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
