#news #police #arrest A 17-year-old Ohio teenager was facing extremely serious charges after authorities accused her of taking the life of her 33-year-old boyfriend’s mother following an alleged ultimatum that investigators say he failed to carry out himself. Kaitlyn Coones was accused in connection with the May 2023 death of 53-year-old Nicole Jones. According to investigators, Coones was in a relationship with Nicole’s 33-year-old son, Jonathan Jones, and prosecutors alleged that tension had developed because Nicole was interfering with their relationship. Authorities claimed Coones eventually gave Jonathan a five-hour ultimatum to take care of the situation himself. When that five-hour period passed without him following through, investigators alleged that Coones decided to take matters into her own hands. According to prosecutors, Nicole was inside the kitchen of her Sylvania Township home when Coones allegedly approached her and carried out the attack. Jonathan was reportedly inside the living room at the time. Rather than going into the graphic details, investigators alleged that Nicole suffered serious injuries during the encounter and did not survive. Authorities say what happened afterward became another major part of the investigation. Detectives alleged that Coones and Jonathan left the residence and traveled to two different stores, where they purchased a tarp, trash bags and other supplies. Investigators believe those items were then used to clean the kitchen and conceal evidence connected to what had happened. Police alleged that the pair then transported Nicole’s remains to a nearby apartment complex and placed them inside a dumpster. Investigators have said they do not believe Nicole’s remains will ever be recovered. At the time of the incident, Coones was reportedly in foster care and living at a group home. Investigators said she later sent a message to a nurse from the home claiming that she had taken someone's life and was now on the run. Coones and Jonathan then allegedly fled the United States and traveled to Mexico. Initially, authorities believed Coones herself could have been the victim of a kidnapping and asked the public for assistance locating the pair. As investigators uncovered more information, however, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance changed dramatically. Authorities eventually located Coones and Jonathan in Mexico, where they were both taken into custody and returned to face charges in connection with Nicole’s disappearance and death. Detectives said Coones later provided investigators with a detailed account of what allegedly happened during an interview with FBI agents. Prosecutors also pointed to additional evidence they said supported their case, including GPS information allegedly showing Jonathan traveling to the stores where supplies were purchased and to the dumpster where investigators believe Nicole's remains were left. Jonathan was also charged in connection with his mother's death, with authorities alleging that he assisted Coones with concealing what happened afterward. Coones, despite being 17 at the time, was ordered to face the case as an adult. She pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. A judge ultimately set her bond at $1.75 million. What initially appeared to authorities to be a situation involving a missing teenager eventually developed into a far more complicated investigation. Police allege that a relationship between a 17-year-old girl and a 33-year-old man, an ultimatum involving his mother, evidence gathered from multiple locations and the pair's sudden trip to Mexico ultimately led investigators to uncover what they believe happened to Nicole Jones.
