On July 26, 2021, an Orangeburg police officer believed he had encountered an armed suspect, but what happened next changed his career forever. After responding to reports of a man allegedly carrying a weapon, the officer used force against a disabled elderly man before discovering the supposed firearm was actually a walking stick used to scare away stray dogs. Bodycam footage captured the aftermath as the injured man confronted officers, fellow deputies questioned what had happened, and one officer refused to support an inaccurate account of the incident. The case ultimately led to criminal charges against the officer, his dismissal from the department, and a $650,000 settlement for the injured man.
