A black 2019 Tesla Model 3 peeled out of its spot. It nearly smashed into his patrol car. He hit the lights. The driver stopped. That driver was 22-year-old Joniyah Cardenas. She admitted to drinking alcohol that night. Willey smelled booze on her breath. He spotted an open Casamigos tequila bottle in the car. He called Officer Domenick Allegretta for sobriety tests. Allegretta began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Next came the Walk and Turn. Joniyah missed heel-to-toe steps. She turned wrong. She took the wrong number of steps back. Last was the One Leg Stand. She failed to lift her foot right. She lost balance. Her wild exit, the alcohol smell, her shaky signs, the open bottle, and poor test results led to arrest for DUI. They impounded the car for 12 hours under John's Law. Willey drove her to the station. There, they read the standard statement. She agreed to a breath test. Her Alcotest showed 0.13% BAC—almost twice the 0.08% limit. Paperwork done, they released her to a sober adult. He signed the liability warning for her.
