A nearby resident called police, saying his security camera had captured a vehicle speeding away. Moments later, another caller reported a woman blocking the exit at Chase Bank on Van Riper Avenue, near South Center Street. Officer Jerel Harris arrived and found the woman in a shiny 2019 Porsche Cayenne. She was Joanna Drelich, wife of retired Garfield Police Officer Gregory Drelich. Joanna said she had been in Wallington earlier that night and was on her way home. As Officer Harris spoke with her, he smelled alcohol on her breath and noticed signs of impairment. Lieutenant Robert Centkowski had also seen damage to the driver’s sides of three parked cars on Locust Street: a 2023 Toyota Sienna, a 2021 Toyota Sienna, and a 2023 Toyota Rav4. Harris spotted similar damage on the passenger side of Joanna’s Porsche, consistent with striking the parked cars. Officers Cachola, Griffin, Juliano, and Sistaro soon arrived to assist. After seeing the damaged vehicles, Centkowski went to Van Riper Avenue to speak with Joanna. Suspecting she was impaired, Centkowski asked Joanna to take field sobriety tests. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, he saw that her eyes did not track well and showed signs of intoxication. Her eyes began moving rapidly before reaching 45 degrees, and their movement appeared jerky. On the Walk and Turn test, she did not touch heel to toe properly and took too many or too few steps. During the One Leg Stand, she could not keep her foot raised and steady. She put it down before the test was over. The damage to the cars, Joanna’s admission that she had been drinking, and her performance on the tests led Officer Harris to arrest her for driving under the influence. Her Porsche was seized for 12 hours under state law. Police then took her to the Elmwood Park Police Department for further processing. At the station, officers read Joanna the standard statement for drivers. She refused to take a breath test but agreed to answer questions. She admitted drinking wine before driving. After the paperwork was finished, officers released her to her son, who signed a form agreeing to watch over her until her court date. Joanna received tickets for driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, leaving an accident with property damage, reckless driving, and careless driving. Court records show Joanna pleaded guilty to DUI on June 25, 2024. The charge of leaving the scene was reduced to failing to report an accident. Under the plea deal, she had to use an ignition interlock device for three months, spend 12 hours at a resource center for drunk drivers, and pay $780 in fines. The other three tickets were dismissed. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
