Columbus police officers attempted to stop a wanted man in the South Linden area on the evening of the incident, but the situation quickly escalated into a dangerous pursuit. At approximately 6:21 p.m., officers located the suspect driving a silver Chevy Impala and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, the driver backed into a police cruiser and fled, prompting officers to begin a pursuit through the neighborhood. The chase came to a sudden end when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree in an alley located east of Medina Avenue and north of 22nd Avenue. The driver suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:06 p.m. According to Columbus police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was requested to send a crash reconstruction specialist to the scene to conduct an independent investigation.
