NEW BEDFORD, MA - March 4, 2026 - A fisherman was rescued from the freezing waters of New Bedford Harbor early Wednesday morning, March 4, 2026, after falling between two fishing vessels at Fish Island. The incident began just after 6:30 a.m. when the victim managed to call 911 himself, reporting that he had fallen into the water and was unable to climb back out. Upon arrival, Officer Kenneth Almeida located the man clinging to dock lines. Almeida immediately secured the victim’s hands and provided reassurance, telling the man he would not let go until backup arrived. Officers Mackenzie Sylvester, Abraham Nazario, Andy Soares, and Jesse Branagan arrived shortly after to assist. Working together, the five officers successfully hauled the man from the frigid water and onto the pier. The fisherman was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for medical evaluation. New Bedford officials commended the responding officers for their quick thinking and decisive teamwork. Their coordinated efforts are being credited with saving the man’s life before the onset of severe hypothermia. The New Bedford Police Department continues to remind those working on the waterfront to remain vigilant, especially during the early morning hours when surfaces can be slick and water temperatures remain dangerously low.
