A possibly drunk woman had just left, the manager said. She drove off in a gray GMC Sierra, heading west on E Main. Officer Wessendorf spotted the truck near Cedar Avenue. He flipped a U-turn and closed in by the Main Street Bridge. The Sierra turned north onto N 2nd Street and veered into the center lane. He saw it swerve. Lights flashed. The stop happened in Salerno’s lot at 320 N 2nd Street. He approached the driver. She was Crystal Marie Kjellsvik. At first, she claimed she’d been in Geneva. Then she admitted Cooper’s Hawk in St. Charles. Talking to her, he smelled booze. Her words slurred. She owned up to three glasses of wine. The restaurant check later showed six. To check her impairment, he had her recite the alphabet from D to W. She botched it. Next, count back from 68 to 53. She overshot past 53. Out of the truck now. First test: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. No smooth eye pursuit. Jerking at max turn. It started before 45 degrees. Walk and Turn followed. Heel-toe missed. Bad turn. Wrong step count. One Leg Stand last. Foot not high enough. Down too soon. The manager’s tip, wild drive, booze smell, her admission, failed tests—all added up. Officer Wessendorf cuffed her for DUI. Into the patrol car. Off to St. Charles PD. There, she skipped breath tests. Processed, then freed to a friend for court.
