Del Norte County Crescent City, California On June 8, 2024, in Crescent City, California, a Highway Patrol officer tried to stop a speeding motorcyclist, Joseph Wendell Nelson, on Lake Earl Drive. Nelson did not comply and sped away down Blackwell Lane towards Railroad Avenue, trying to escape the officer. The pursuit lasted 20 minutes, with multiple agencies from Del Norte County involved, and speeds surpassing 120 miles per hour at times. Nelson eventually collided his motorcycle with a Del Norte County Sheriff's Department patrol car in the Norris Kitchen parking lot on Highway 101 North.
