On March 18th, 2024, Gary Wendell Prokop — a 19-year registered investment advisor and longtime deacon at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota — was arrested and charged with securities fraud, wire fraud, investment advisor fraud, and theft by swindle after Minnesota securities regulators confirmed his "opportunity fund" was never registered with the state at all. Investigators found Prokop had run a classic Ponzi structure for nine years, raising $9.4 million from 71 investors, nearly all of them fellow church members and youth hockey families who trusted him personally, using new deposits to pay earlier investors their promised 9 to 12 percent returns while funneling roughly $6.1 million toward his own expenses, including a lake cabin and his daughter's college tuition. The fund held just $380,000 in actual assets by the time it collapsed. The scheme was uncovered after a retired schoolteacher and fellow congregant, growing suspicious after repeated withdrawal delays, asked state regulators a simple question about the fund's registration status. Prokop was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison and permanently barred from the securities industry. ––– Disclaimer: This video is a dramatization based on real events.
