On February 26, 2023, at 2:18 AM, St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite crashed his county-owned Chevy Traverse into the back of a Nissan Rogue on southbound US-131 in Schoolcraft Township, Michigan. Vehicle telemetry showed he was traveling nearly 100 MPH in the five seconds before impact. He never hit the brakes. His headlights were off. The Rogue — carrying a husband and wife — rolled across the median. Lillywhite's blood alcohol content measured .252. More than three times the legal limit in Michigan. Inside his wrecked SUV: a Glock in the center console, his sheriff's badge, two bulletproof vests, and two more handguns in Pelican cases in the trunk. This is the full Michigan State Police release — Trooper Knaup's body camera, Trooper Burnside's body camera, Sgt. Lindsay's body camera, Sgt. Coles' body camera, and in-car video from three MSP units. News stations aired a 15-minute clip. This video has everything. WHAT'S IN THIS FOOTAGE: - The Kalamazoo South County Fire Battalion Chief watching Lillywhite climb from the driver's seat into the passenger seat after the crash - Trooper Knaup's first contact, consent-to-search, and the discovery of the Glock next to the sheriff's badge - The radio broadcast where Knaup first identifies Lillywhite to dispatch as the at-fault driver - Two voicemails to a supervisor who never picked up - The backup call to "Kerry" for guidance on how to handle a sitting sheriff's loaded county cruiser - Sgt. Lindsay opening the trunk and finding the bulletproof vests - Trooper Burnside reading Miranda and arresting a man who repeatedly denied being the driver — while alone in the car - Three witnesses who all place Lillywhite as the only occupant of the vehicle THE OUTCOME: Lillywhite was charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Carrying a Concealed Weapon Under the Influence — both misdemeanors. On April 24, 2023, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced the same day to 12 months probation. No additional jail time. In August 2023, the St. Joseph County Commissioners voted to ask Governor Gretchen Whitmer to remove him from office. Michigan's Attorney General reviewed the request and sent a recommendation to the Governor's office. The Governor never acted. Lillywhite did not file for re-election. In August 2024, Chad Spence — a 26-year veteran of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office — won the Republican primary. Spence was sworn in on January 1, 2025. Mark Lillywhite retired. He never spent a day in jail beyond his initial 10-hour booking. CASE DETAILS: - MSP Incident #: 51-913-23 - Agency: Michigan State Police — Paw Paw Post (Post 51) - Arresting Trooper: Chad Burnside - Lead Investigator: Tpr.
