On the 24th of October 2024, police were called to an apartment complex in Southport, Queensland, after reports of a violent disturbance. Officers arrived to find a man dropping an electric scooter from a balcony before grabbing an elderly woman in what was described as a chokehold. He then attempted to flee by jumping from the balcony but was tasered by police and taken into custody. Body-worn camera footage from the dramatic arrest has since been released to the public. Paramedics later sedated the man before transporting him to hospital. Just days later, while in custody, he damaged property inside a watchhouse after officers refused a request. The offender was on parole at the time and in breach of a probation order. He later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including serious assault of an elderly person and wilful damage. The court acknowledged the psychological impact on the victim and imposed a custodial sentence. Watch the full video for bodycam footage and a breakdown of the court proceedings.
